International Biodiversity Day 2021

From nature-based solutions to climate, health issues, food and water security, and sustainable livelihoods, biodiversity is the foundation upon which we can build back better. While there is a growing recognition that biological diversity is a global asset of tremendous value to future generations, three-quarters of the land-based environment and about 66% of the marine environment have been significantly altered by human actions.  The first step to solving any problem is to understand the issue. Science and traditional knowledge not only help understand the state of biodiversity, but also enable us to comprehend the drivers of biodiversity loss and pathways for a sustainable future. Biodiversity is a solution to climate change.  Raising awareness on protected areas and other effective area- based protection measures, which deal with the different objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity. The Conference of the Parties (COP) has established seven thematic programs of work, which correspond to some major biomes on the planet. Each program establishes a vision for, and basic principles to guide future work. They also set out key issues for consideration, identify potential outputs, and suggest a timetable and means for achieving these. Implementation of the work programs depends on contributions from Parties, the Secretariat, relevant intergovernmental and other organizations.  Agricultural Biodiversity, Dry and Sub-Humid Lands Biodiversity, Forest Biodiversity, Inland Waters Biodiversity, Islands Biodiversity, Marine and Coastal Biodiversity, Mountain Biodiversity.
