Millions of plastic granules invade the beaches of Sri Lanka

Maria Beatrice Barberis

The fire aboard the container ship that remained blocked off the coast of Sri Lanka, was brought to an end on 1 June. Its structure is severely damaged and the ship is currently being towed into deep water, as it is expected to sink at any moment. An international operation was needed to extinguish the flames on the large ship, as well as the participation of the navy. Despite the use of manpower and means, part of the cargo ended up at sea, causing one of the worst environmental catastrophes in the history of the Asian nation. The ship carried 1,500 containers, 8 of which ended up in the sea. In particular, millions of polyethylene granules - a plastic material, have ended up in the ocean. These materials were intended for the packaging industry and instead submerged the surrounding beaches. The cargo also carried 25 tonnes and 28 containers of nitric acid, caustic soda, lubricants and other chemicals. The government has banned fishing in a coastal strip 80 kilometers long. (source: lifegate.it) In the face of such a disaster one feels powerless. But the most important thing that any of us can do is to stop using plastic, especially single-use plastic, thus industries and companies will stop producing plastic, it's that simple. People have the power to stop all this! Adopt an eco-friendly lifestyle, try our natural reusable eco-friendly products, Say Yes to Life, Earth Thanks! 🌿
