Plastic ingredients found inside many detergents used daily for surfaces, dishes and laundry and inevitably destined to pollute the Planet.

The new restrictions to contain the pandemic force us to spend much more time at home, which we may be using to take even more care of ourselves and our personal belongings. Can we do this avoiding further pollution for the Planet? Greenpeace has reported the presence of plastic ingredients inside many detergents used daily for surfaces, dishes and laundry and inevitably destined to pollute the Planet. The most present plastic ingredients were mainly in liquid, semi-solid and soluble form and only in a few cases in solid form (known as microplastics). The study has detected the presence of solid particles smaller than 50 micrometers. There is also the possibility that companies use plastics in the form of even smaller particles: nanoplastics (less than a nanometre, one millionth of a millimetre) which are even more difficult to detect with the analytical instruments currently available. For this reason, the proposal of ECHA (the European Chemicals Agency) to ban the use of intentionally added microplastics plays a key role in the fight against plastic pollution. It is essential to prohibit the use of all plastic materials used as ingredients in everyday products - not only solids, but also liquid, semi-solid or soluble ones - without any minimum limit of particle size: the smaller they are, the greater their danger for the Planet but also for us because they can potentially penetrate directly into the tissues. While the European regulatory process is taking its course, each of us can already do our part by avoiding immediately buying products containing plastic materials in solid, liquid, semi-solid or soluble form.
