Ecosystems rewilding can combat climate change.

Maria Beatrice Barberis

Ecosystem rewilding and restoration are among the most effective weapons for combating climate change. Restoring peatlands, marine, lake and riverine habitats, and adopting the principles of regenerative agriculture would significantly reduce the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. The draft for the 15th Conference of the Parties on Biodiversity CoP, scheduled for next October, calls for protecting at least 30% of the world's land and 30% of the oceans by 2030; slowing the rate of extinction by 90%; halving the introduction of invasive species into the wild; promote the integrity of all ecosystems and enhance the role of indigenous peoples in their preservation; eliminate pollution from plastics; reduce pesticide use by 2/3; and cut $500 billion a year in subsidies to environmentally harmful activities. Urgent global, national, and regional policies are needed to transform economic, social, and financial patterns so that the trends that have exacerbated biodiversity loss stop by 2030 and allow natural ecosystems to recover over the next two decades, leading to net improvements in 2050. Only in this way we can stop what scientists have called the "sixth mass extinction" in the history of the planet, which could lead to the disappearance of a million animal and plant species due to human activities.  Anyway, top-down decisions are not the only ones that matter: change must flow unstoppably downward to local governments and to the individuals. Our behaviors and choices are essential to reverse the race towards environmental disaster: not only do individual ecological choices have a positive impact, but they are also able to influence economic and industrial policies, by the simple law of supply and demand. If more and more people turn to a green lifestyle, industries and laws will change accordingly. There is simply no time to lose: adopt an eco-friendly lifestyle, use renewables, eco mobility, eat local vegan organic food, remove plastics from your life!  Try our natural reusable eco-friendly products, Say Yes to Life, Earth Thanks! 🌿
