The European Plastic Pact for a faster transition to the circular economy within 2025

The European Plastic Pact, launched in 2019 to accelerate reuse and recycling practices with innovative solutions and for a faster transition to the circular economy within 2025, has also been signed by 66 companies and private organisations and commits signatories on four specific points: the circular design of plastic products and packaging; the responsible use of plastic; recycling; and the use of recycled products. The pact provides for: 1. the design of all plastic packaging and disposable plastic products so that they can be reused, where possible, and in any case be recyclable. 2. promote responsible use of plastics by moving towards a more sustainable use of packaging and disposable plastic products, with the aim of reducing virgin plastic products and packaging by at least 20% (by weight). 3. achieve an increase of at least 25 percentage points by 2025 in the collection, sorting and recycling of all plastics used in packaging and disposable products. This is sufficient to meet the demand for recycled plastics.  4. The use of recycled plastics in new products and packaging is expected to increase, so that by 2025 companies will use at least 30% recycled plastics (by weight) in their product and packaging range. To facilitate the achievement of these objectives, the governments that have joined the pact commit themselves to implementing policies that invest in waste collection and recycling infrastructure, including supportive fiscal policies, raising consumer awareness, at national and European level. Membership of the pact is voluntary, but it requires quantifiable and extremely ambitious commitments that can be verified every year.  If we want to tackle climate change, in addition to energy, we need to look at materials and start treating plastics as valuable raw materials and keeping them out of our oceans.
