Plastic waste will triple in the next 20 years.

We should reduce the use of plastics by 80% over the next 20 years by applying existing solutions and technologies in order to clean up the seas, but unfortunately governments are not going in that direction. What they are doing is not enough to limit the dangerous presence of plastics in the sea. According to current estimates, the amount of plastic reaching the oceans each year is 8 million tonnes, but the real figure is much higher and is around 11 million tonnes. If current trends continue, the amount of plastic polluting the oceans will reach 29 million tonnes by 2040, the equivalent of 50 kg for every metre of the world's coastline. All the efforts made and announced so far to cut plastic waste, by governments and companies, will reduce that projected volume by only about 7% by 2040.Despite growing awareness of the problem in recent years, attempts to reduce waste and limitations on the use of microplastics have so far had a limited impact.
