The growing mobilization in defense of forests, together with a greater awareness of citizens about the importance of reducing the consumption of meat and dairy products, has led the European Union to address the impacts of food production on the destruction of the forests of the Planet.
Globally, the EU is responsible for more than 10% of the destruction of forests through the consumption of products such as meat, dairy products, soya for animal feed, palm oil, coffee and cocoa.
In 2020, the Von Der Leyen Commission made action in defence of biodiversity and against deforestation a central element of the European Green Deal. So much so that in the "EU Biodiversity Strategy 2030" the European Commission committed itself to present in 2021 "a legislative proposal and other measures to avoid or minimize the placing on the EU market of products associated with deforestation or forest degradation and to promote forest-friendly imports and value chains". In order to listen to the opinion of all citizens and to give value to new initiatives, the European Union has therefore decided to open a public consultation procedure on the theme of forest protection: "Deforestation and forest degradation - reducing the impact of products placed on the EU market".
